I Think My Fuel System May Be Clogged

Bring your car, truck, or utility vehicle to our shop right away if you suspect that you have a clog in the fuel system. If there is a problem with the fuel making its way into the engine, you may end up stranded with a dead engine. We are going to list the signs that the fuel system is clogged below. Sometimes, the fix is as easy as replacing the fuel filter.

Hard Starts/No Starts

As we just mentioned, it can be difficult to start your automobile if there is not enough fuel in the engine. In fact, you may not be able to get your car started at all. If it has become a problem firing up the engine lately, bring your vehicle to our shop so we can inspect the fuel system. The sooner we catch the problem the less chance of a dead engine.

Misfiring/Stalling Engine

You may think that everything is okay because the engine eventually starts. This being said, the engine will misfire if there is not enough fuel in the cylinders for the spark plugs to burn. In fact, the engine can misfire so badly that it stalls. A misfiring engine sputters and feels as if your car has the hiccups. You will also be able to hear the engine cut out.

Rough Engine Idling

In addition to the above, you will notice that your engine is idling roughly when you are sitting at a stop. This, too, points to a problem with the fuel delivery to the engine. Fuel system parts that can get clogged include the fuel filter and the fuel hoses. It’s important to have the filter changed every 30,000 miles. If necessary, we will also flush the hoses at this time.

Whining in the Tank

If you do have a clog in the fuel system, the fuel pump may start to whine in the fuel tank. This is because the pump is working overtime in an effort to get the fuel into the engine. In other words, it is meeting resistance when the fuel hits the clog.

Fuel Pump Malfunction

Unfortunately, the fuel pump will start to malfunction because the motor will burn out. This is due to the fact that it is working too hard to keep a constant fuel supply to the engine. This is one reason why it is important to have the fuel system inspected at the first sign of trouble.

We can do that here at our shop, so call us today to set up a service appointment.
